ABOUT THE BRUNCH

The Black History Month Brunch brings together the community for delicious food, empowering words, and world class
entertainment. The event also celebrates and honors the struggles and triumphs of African Americans by recognizing a
select group of individuals who have excelled in their chosen fields and/or have made a difference in our community.
Most importantly, the event helps support the GDL's Summer Reading Program.

Oleta Adams

Being the daughter of a minister, it's no surprise that Oleta Adams’ roots are in gospel, as she often performed in her father's church. But her formal introduction to the masses began rather unexpectedly. While performing in a Kansas City hotel, Oleta was discovered by the British band, Tears for Fears. In 1990, Oleta released her  debut album  Circle of One.  One of the album's standout tracks was a stunningly performed rendition of "Get Here," written and originally performed by  Brenda Russell. The single's success helped Circle of One achieve gold status.

Her success, nurtured by worldwide tours with Tears for Fears, Phil Collins, Michael Bolton, and the late Luther Vandross, has been solidified by four Grammy nominations and a seemingly bottomless well of creative energy.

Straight Ahead

Straight out of Motown, this  group of strong, inventive instrumentalists and vocalists has shown themselves to be powerful and imaginative composers and arrangers. The group was named the finalist in the "Sony Innovators" competition in the first year of performing together. Since then the group has amassed a string of honors, including opening for the legendary Nina Simone at the Montreaux-Switzerland Jazz Festival and being nominated for a Grammy.

Straight Ahead’s performance is sponsored in part by a generous donation from Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Keys.
